This book is a call to action to ordinary Americans by and ordinary American, to do something about the perilous state of the US economy and to make a difference. The thrust of the book is squarely and unashamadly American, and I will not criticise it for that. It also should be lauded for the ambition of the writer. Sadly, pragmatically, this book will simply remain inconsequential to the great economic debate for a number of reasons. The author's stated aim is to mobilise enough independent candidates in Congress to replace some half of the incumbents with non partied independents who would enact swift and important changes. Standing up to be counted, the author is himself standing for election to congress. Nevertheless his ambition is hopelessly overstated. He thinks 50% change is the best case scenario. I think the absolute best case (which would take a miracle in the US political system) is that just one independent could be elected. Having been elected he would then be ignored, so this prescription is a non starter.
Imagine one of those over-dinner conversations you have with someone who is intelligent, interested in current affairs, and somewhat opinionated. Imagine how, for politeness, you nod and go along with areas you think your friend is barking up the wrong tree, whilst agreeing vehemently with areas you are in strong agreement. Now imagine your dinner partner went off and wrote all his thoughts down in a book, and that will describe this work well. The author is no economist, and claims (as many outside a specialism do) that economics is really so simple it does not merit an academic discipline. A professor of economics I know would be delighted by that assessment I am sure!
Specific problems with the analysis are really too numerous to recount. A case in point, in one of the early chapters, the author berates communism, stating it has failed in all areas. He is right of course, except he says - ofr instance - that healthcare is always terrible in communist countries. In fact health care in communist Cuba is actually world class compared to America's third rate mess of competing and inefficient systems. But in general, I agree that communism has failed. He rightly points out that this is because Marx did not fully consider human behaviour. Sadly his own economic tehories also seem to be written in utter ignorance of behavioural science which shows that people do not act with rational self interest in a free market system. The fault he finds in others redounds upon himself.
And then there is his own economic theory, which comes straight from the pages of Ayn rand's Atlas Shrugged. Rand writes a nice story to wrap her miserable philosophy, but this particular book is non fiction. We are told what we need is a free market - totally free of interference. Apparently the author sees no dichotomy with the notion that we shoud REGULATE to make the market free. yes, his prescription for the free market is more regulation.
The author also picks up folklore from Ayn Rand. Rand claims in her work that the US is the only country to have its name mongrammed on its currency, and the author repeats this "folk etymology" by stating that the symbol derived from the initials US written over each other. Sadly this (and various other little snippets) is wrong. The US dollar symbo derived from the Spanish Peso symbol and was in use as legal tender in the Americas, including the New England colonies prior to the birth fo the United States.
there is a good range of subjects covered - none to any great depth. It is clear that the author is intelligent and well read, but not an expert in the areas he is writing about. This appears to be a self published work by someone with the laudable goal of wanting to make a difference, but who is sadly unlikely to merit much more than a Wikipedia entry (if he is lucky).
Oh and one last thing on style: the author is Caps Happy. He also tends to go on tiny sidetracks and diversions, and when he references works he does it in a slightly curious way (sticking in an ISBN-10 number in brackets in the text). I suspect a professional edit could have improved this work somewhat.

The Free Market Manifesto How To Fix The Economy And Restore America Economic Dominance Jim Bednarski 9780982213216 Books Reviews
I am impressed! It is a powerful book on political economics, and as the author says, "We the people are all paying for it," and much of what we are paying for is not in our best interests. The book is first of all quite informative, secondly provocative, and thirdly bold, and brutally honest.
The author did his homework, synthesized, and analyzed, and then did not hesitate to offer some frightening conclusions, which manages to get the reader's attention. He reveals how greed has damaged our industrial base, our health care system, and even our educational and governmental institutions. He went for the jugular and labeled many of our white collar executives as thieves. He makes us even more aware of the seriousness of the many uncaring fathers and single moms, who are raising new generations of unloved and un-nurtured people. Moreover, he does not hesitate to offer courageous, and I might say, unabashed opinions about what needs to be done to "restore" our nation to a position of world leadership, economic strength, and social order.
Bednarski's book will upset many people, and especially the guilty parties, but I applaud his willingness to not only say, but to record it, for posterity. I hope it will encourage change, and as unrealistic as I suspect some of his ideas are, he is being forthright to suggest term limits of our elected officials, compensation reform, prison reform, and curbing the epidemic of unwed mothers, all of which would be for the good of the nation.
I think his book will inspire more than a few potentially great and good people to seek political office.
The Free Market Manifesto is an entertaining and informative read outlining the history, current status and solutions needed to return America to its once rightful place as a leading economic global power. This is not a pie in the sky look at our problems, but a real analysis with the insight worthy of our consideration and action as a people, specifically "We the People".
This feat is accomplished by providing us with an incredibly clear and simple understanding of the extremely complex system making up our "Free Market Economy" and the landmark concept "We All Pay For Everything" in our society. The book transforms economic babble into economic common sense.
Although this appears at first glance, a simplistic notion, in reality it serves as a lens through which we can clearly view capitalism, consumption, and value determination in our Free Market Society, as well as its impact on the ideals of America's founders. Given this, the question remains," Are these underpinnings intact or are they unraveling before our eyes?" The author explores what drove America's economic engine to become the envy of the world; what went wrong, when, why; and what can we do to repair the damage. The solutions are explored with historical vision with an occasional touch of humor.
The author shines a bright light on how we got here and who is responsible. The book's proposed action items have an uncanny simplicity and wisdom with a bit more than a dash of sarcasm and wit thrown in for good measure. I couldn't put the book down and better still, I felt empowered and motivated to think, "I can actually make a meaningful and measurable difference by my everyday purchases and actions."
With every dollar I spend I'm, in effect, supporting the companies that make the products and supply the services I buy. We cannot make a single daily purchase without ultimately supporting a company's financial and political goals whether we agree or not. This is a simple but exceptionally powerful perspective and philosophy that empowers us. The fact that, "I am not powerless, but effective as an individual and better still as part of the bigger collective, "We the People" are motivated, reaching back toward the ideals on which America was founded.
The Free Market Manifesto offers "We the People" a chance at healing through the economic prescriptions offered in this book. It's intent is alleviating the recent suffering we have endured in this cradle of liberty we know as the United States. This book provides a non-political non-partisan point of view. There is plenty of responsibility to be claimed on both sides of the aisle and in Congress for creating this economic cancer that must be removed and healed if America is to survive.
The promise The Free Market Manifesto holds is the recapturing of the America we love. Every American and every person who dreams of being an American would do well to read the wisdom and solutions offered in this book. We owe our children and grandchildren the nation that was delivered to us at our birth. If we don't fight to defend what is true, and right, and just about America, the dream that is our nation is destined to "Fall As Rome Fell". I hope "We The People" have grown, learning from the past mistakes of countless countries with citizens to apathetic and paralyzed to act before their fate was sealed. Does the United State and we as a people have what it takes to see our way out of the greatest challenge since the Great Depression and World War II ? Reading this book will help all of us answer this vexing question. Spellbound....it did for me!
